FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can I only convert to WAV?
Web browsers can decode many audio formats but can only natively encode PCM audio (WAV). Encoding to MP3, AAC, or OGG requires additional JavaScript libraries which add significant download size and complexity. WAV is lossless and works with virtually every application.
Is my audio kept private?
Yes. Your audio file never leaves your device. All decoding and encoding is done in-browser using the Web Audio API. We do not have servers that process your audio.
Can I convert MP3 to WAV?
Yes. MP3 files are decoded by your browser's built-in MP3 decoder, then re-encoded as 16-bit PCM WAV. Note that MP3 is lossy — converting to WAV won't recover frequencies that were discarded during MP3 encoding, but it won't degrade the audio further.
Can I convert WAV to MP3?
Not with this tool — only WAV output is supported. For WAV to MP3 conversion, you can use desktop tools like Audacity, VLC, or ffmpeg, or an online service that explicitly supports MP3 encoding.
What does "16-bit PCM" mean?
PCM (Pulse-Code Modulation) is the standard uncompressed audio format. 16-bit means each audio sample is stored as a 16-bit integer, giving 96 dB of dynamic range. This is CD quality and is widely supported by all audio software.
Why is the WAV file so much larger than my original?
WAV stores uncompressed audio. A 4-minute stereo file at 44,100 Hz 16-bit = ~42 MB WAV, compared to ~4 MB as MP3. The audio quality is identical; it's just stored without compression.
